HOW DO GEOLOGISTS IDENTIFY MINERALS IN A ROCK?

Geologists can identify some minerals by observing their colour, crystal form hardness or lustre.
They identify other minerals by testing them. They test HARDNESS or CHEMICAL REACTIONS.

Sedimentary rocks like CHALK or LIMESTONE can contain CALCITE. Calcite reacts with vinegar and makes BUBBLES

  • A rock sample
  • A magnifying glass
  • Vinegar
  • A glass
  • Paper towels
  • Safety glasses
   
       
 TEST YOUR ROCK SAMPLE
  • Wear your SAFETY GLASSES
  • Put your rock in a the glass
  • Cover it with vinegar. Leave it for 5 minutes
  • Are there any bubbles? Bubbles means it contains CALCITE

The CENSUS is a list of inhabitants of a municipality, province or country. It includes information such as education, work...

We can study population by GENDER, AGE (children/adults/seniors), ACTIVITY (active/inactive)

The population of a place changes over time due to BIRTH RATE (babies born), DEATH RATE (people who die), EMIGRANTS (people who go to another place to live), INMIGRANTS (people who come to live in a place)
Why people move to different places? To study, to find work, because of drought, famine, war...

 There are a lot of archaeological sites in Spain. One of the most important is ATAPUERCA, in Burgos.
In 2007, archaeologists discovered human bones in Atapuerca

They had evidence to prove the existence of human beings in Atapuerca about 800.000 years ago.
These people were the first inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula.





The bones the archaeologists found in 2007 belonged to a child.
He was about 11 years old when he died.
Archaeologists called him the CHILD OF GRAN DOLINA
